ABOUT US

MycoTech packaging, a green replacement for Styrofoam and other fossil-fuel-derived packaging foam, is made from mycelium-based composite which is 100% biodegradable.

Our patent-pending process uses a special multicellular mycelium fungi strain, corn husk waste, and paper waste to create a packaging foam with similar protection and shipping properties to Styrofoam.

The Problem

Petroleum-based plastic foam packaging, such as Styrofoam, has virtually no market for recycling. It takes up 30% of landfill space and is not biodegradable. It is estimated that 90% of the 14 million tons of plastic pollution in the ocean annually is from Styrofoam – the most used foam packaging material.

Plastic pollution has transformed our oceans’ ecosystems with 50-75 trillion plastic pieces, carrying lethal consequences. One dead juvenile whale had 40 kilograms of plastic and other trash in its digestive system. This heart-wrenching story extends to an estimated 100,000 marine animals annually. By 2050, projections describe a dystopian future where plastic will outnumber fish in the oceans.

To make matters worse, sunlight, wind, and ocean currents transform plastics into microplastics, infiltrating marine life and posing a severe threat to the human endocrine system. Styrofoam, over time, accumulates contaminants that transform it into toxic and/or cancerous materials, endangering countless species and humans. The average person consumes 18 kilograms of plastic in a lifetime at current plastic production levels.
